Course Overview

Did you leave school early? Would you like to improve your employment prospects and opportunities for further education?

Why not return to study and undertake the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE). Additional support is offered to students returning to study.

Students over the age of 18 on the 1/1/2012 and have not attended secondary school for 12 months can complete Year 12 in as little as one year. Younger students will have to complete Year 11 first and will take two years (or more if they choose) to complete the VCE.

Subjects are negotiated each year according to your interests but usually include English, Maths, IT, Legal Studies and Health and Human Development.

Students can supplement their GippsTAFE subjects with distance study from the Distance Education Centre Victoria.

What you will learn


The VCE Certificate can be obtained by adults on the successful completion of eight units.  These must include any two units of English plus three Year 12 subjects.

An ATAR score is obtained by the successful completion of four subjects at Year 12 level.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

RPL is not available for VCE courses. Credit may be obtained for some Certificate II and above courses through application to the VCAA, contact the VCE Co-ordinator if this applies to you.

Employment Prospects

This qualification will assist you to continue with further study at TAFE or university as well enhance your employment prospects in many industries.

Entry Requirements

  • Mature age entry (over 18) can enrol directly in Year 12. Other students have to complete Year 11 first.
  • You may have to attend an interview during which you will be given information about the skills you need to have at the beginning of your studies.

Assessment

Assessment is as prescribed by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority guidelines.

Opportunities For Further Study

  • This qualification will assist you to continue with further study at TAFE or university.
  • Many students enter training in the welfare, health and community services sectors. Others go on to business, education or arts degree courses or enter employment in a range of fields.

Specialist Course Information

Units successfully completed during prior VCE of VCAL enrolments may be credited towards the certificate. Students may also be able to enrol in units that will enable them to finish their VCAL certificate. Students enrolled in Year 12 units will also be required to enrol in SF5031 Skills For Further Study, a unit from the VCAL Senior Certificate. This unit is completed online, through workshops and integrated within the Year 12 classes.
