Course Overview

Want to become a park ranger or cultural heritage officer? Or are you looking for a pathway to further training?

This course will provide you with practical skills you can readily use in the workplace or as a foundation for further study. You'll learn about environmental work practices and appropriate uses of traditional customs. Plus, you get to select ten units of your choice (called electives) so you can tailor the course to your own interests and goals.

The benefit of doing this course at GippsTAFE is that you are able to learn the theory behind the modules, as well as undertake actual field study and work to give you well rounded skills for future employment.

This course is acknowledged as accredited training for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Peoples.

What you will learn

In this course you will learn how to:

  • Follow occupational health and safety (OHS) procedures
  • Observe environmental work practices
  • Provide basic first aid
  • Work effectively in the industry
  • Participate in workplace communications.

In addition to the core subjects above, ten electives are selected. Below is an example of ten units that are commonly selected:

  • Maintain cultural places
  • Record information about country.
  • Prepare for work
  • Operate in isolated and remote situations
  • Read and interpret maps
  • Propose appropriate use of traditional customs
  • Provide appropriate information on cultural knowledge
  • Work in an Indigenous community/organisation
  • Carry out the inspection of designated areas
  • Undertake site assessment.

Qualifications And Recognition

Upon successful completion of this course students will be eligible to receive the Certificate II in Conservation and Land Management - Indigenous Land Management.
